Fear of Missing Out

Show notes

This week: FOMO

Tom discusses the fear of missing out.

Therapeutic coping strategies to help manage FOMO:

Mindfulness and Meditation: Ground yourself in the present moment. Limit Social Media: It might be helpful to reduce the amount of time spent on social media or to take breaks from it altogether. Gratitude Journaling: Spend a few minutes each day listing things you are grateful for. Set Boundaries: If you're constantly being bombarded with invites or information about events, it's okay to set boundaries. Reality Check: Remind yourself that images and stories on social media often don't show the full picture. Stay Connected: Spend quality time with friends and loved ones. Self-compassion: You are enough as you are. Prioritize and Clarify Values: Determine what is truly important to you. Seek Professional Help: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), for example, can offer strategies to challenge and modify negative patterns of thinking and behavior. Engage in Activities You Enjoy: Instead of focusing on what you might be missing, redirect your energy into activities you genuinely love. Reframe Your Thoughts: Instead of thinking, "I'm missing out on X event," think, "I'm choosing to prioritize Y right now." Limit Comparison: Remember the adage "comparison is the thief of joy."
